Page 3. ---- Antoinette Arsenault Dons Feminine Attire for Sentence. === ANTOINETTE ARSENAULT, 37, who dressed and posed as a man and worked at a munitions plant for two years, and "married" a 22-year-old New Brunswick girl, on February 14, will spend the next 23 months in the Women's Jail on Fullum street.

Her male attire and a small black "moustache" had disappeared when she was brought from the jail for sentence this morning before Judge Marin on the two charges to which she pleaded guilty on Saturday. The men's clothes and shoes had been replaced by a woman's. gray tailored suit, silk stockings - and high heeled shoes. Perched jauntily on her head was a blue beret.

SENTENCES CONCURRENT She was sentenced to 23 months in jail on each of the two charges, the terms to run concurrently."

She pleaded guilty under Article 468, Par. 1. of the Criminal Code to having falsified a "certified copy of part of a birth register," her birth certificate, on which she had signed her name as Andre-Pierre Arsenault. The second accusation was preferred under Article 480 of the Criminal Code, and charged that she was an accomplice before. the fact in falsifying a marriage register. She was accused of this second offence for having posed as a male at the "marriage," which took place at the French Baptist Church on Jeanne Mance street on February 14, with Rev. G. Chatot. officiating.

APPEARS IN CHAMBERS Although the girl's name appeared on the court lists for sentence before Judge Marin in one of the regular court rooms today, she was brought up secretly by way of the rear elevator from the garage under the Court House. She was taken directly to Judge Marin's chambers on the third floor at 9 a.m., one hour before the time scheduled for the opening of court.

She was returned to the garage in the same way and taken by automobile to the Fullum street Jail.

It was revealed today that she is a native of St. Celestin, near Three Rivers, and that even as a child, she preferred to play with boys rather than girls, and was called a "tomboy",

Sorry but I laughed. Technically the city was named after the St. Lawrence & the St. Maurice in 1599 or so; they thought there was a third one basically. But we've also got a small one: Millette River. They want to start digging this year to add another one. Apparently there are two other tiny tiny ones, Bettez and Lacerte...

Uh I'm not from around here, I may need to look it up for fun. Lovely place for hiking, but living here is... an experience. Umm.

MONTREAL — Thick, smoky air blanketed many parts of Quebec on Sunday as more than 110 wildfires raging in the northern parts of the province set more communities on high alert for new evacuation orders.

Environment Canada issued smog warnings for wide swaths of the north, south and west of the province, including Montreal, Quebec, Laval, Longueuil and Trois-Rivières.

In Montreal and Ottawa, the air quality health index was listed at 10 or more, a level described as “very high risk.”

Environment Canada said the poor air quality due to the forest fires will likely continue until Monday morning, adding the risk is highest for people with lung or heart disease, elderly people, children, pregnant women and those who work outdoors.

“Stop any outdoor activities and contact your health care provider if you or someone in your care experience shortness of breath, wheezing (including asthma attacks), severe coughing, dizziness or chest pain,” it wrote. “If you experience any symptoms or feel unwell, stay indoors.” [...]

"MONTREALER GETS LENIENT SENTENCE," Montreal Star. July 4, 1934. Page 11. ---- Pleads Guilty at Three Rivers in Cigar Factory Fraud --- THREE RIVERS, July 4 - (C.P.) - Time in jail was the sentence of Magistrate F. X. Lacoursiere today imposed upon J. Adrien Deslauriers of Montreal when he pleaded guilty to a charge of conspiracy to defraud. Deslauriers was a director of the Venus Cigar Company. His arrest followed failure of the company to start manufacturing operations after stock shares had been widely sold in this district. He has been in jail here since the middle of May.

Four other directors of the company are at liberty on bail pending hearing of their trial at the next criminal assizes. They face the same charge as that against Deslauriers.

Two salesmen of the company, J. H. Prieur and J. B. Cote, have already been sentenced to four months each in prison for conspiracy to defraud.

The prosecution alleges that an abandoned school had been purchased in Cap de la Madeleine as a factory for the company and the stock widely sold about here, but that the company never started turning out cigars.
